    El diseño de obras públicas en Colombia: ¿Un problema de ingeniería civil o de interpretaciones legales?

    The study and design of public works in Colombia has been complicated in recent times due to different elements of conflict between government organizations and consultants. Though this use to happen in minor concepts, it is not rational that minor things some times be converted to the most important part of a construction. As the 80a Law of 1993 must be applied for contracting with the government, new conditions that stimulates studies and design deficiencies have appeared. That Law is plenty of good wishes, but the application has shown that yields to many problems. This article presents some aspects of the actual situation in Colombia.

    Estudio experimental de cargas sobre muros cartón yeso (Drywall)

    This research studies the Drywall panel’s behavior subjected to the action of horizontal loads. Furthermore this pretends to establish a comparison between the damage produced in the two systems (Drywall - Masonry) when they were submitted to horizontal loads. The research gave as a result that Drywall panels submitted to drift values about 0.5% had an acceptable behavior from the point of view of the damage present in this system compared to masonry nonstructural walls. Being Drywall panels nonstructural walls with larger inter story drift capacity than masonry walls, they emerge as a new alternative because of the requirements presented in NSR-98 (Norma Colombiana de Diseño y Construcción Sismo Resistente) about demand of drift.

    Qué pasa con los pavimentos de las calles de Bogotá?

    As use to happen with most civil works, the cost of pavement construction involves two components, the one direct corresponding to initial investment and the other in maintenance delayed in its economic life. High quality of design and materials represents a more expensive construction that needs less maintenance. For the construction of pavements in Bogota, it has been usual to take in to consideration just the initial cost. This approach has shown to be very inappropriate because the duration of pavements obtained is much less than estimate, involving very high costs for repair. Those very brief notes on the subject finalize recommending to local authorities a change in the design approach that yields a better result in the long term.
