to assess the effectiveness of the subgingival application of melatonin as a coadjuvant in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Materials and methods: The design of this research was experimental, 6 patients were selected between 22 and 47 years with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis, the applied treatment was carried out by the split mouth design, it was divided into control side where it was performed scaling and root planing (RAR) and experimental side where RAR was performed and synthetic melatonin was applied using autologous gel as plasma vehicle. Subsequent evaluations were made at 8, 15 and 45 days. Subsequently, a descriptive analysis was carried out and the student t test was used. Results: It was found that melatonin produced clinical changes in the gingiva, reducing the signs of inflammation in the texture (from 85% to 15%), consistency (from 45% to 0%) and color (from 85% to 15%) of the experimental group. There was also a decrease in the gingival index of the experimental group (from 1.83 to 0.54) with respect to the control group (from 1.88 to 1.34). And lower levels of hemorrhage in the experimental group (from 1.85 to 0.54) unlike the control group (from 1.63 to 1.75). Conclusion: subgingival melatonin can potentiate the effects of conventional therapy so it is recommended to conduct more studies on the subject.

Periodontal disease occurs after the accumulation of dental biofilm, which generates an immunoinflammatory response producing oxidative stress and damage to the periodontium, with overproduction of free radicals and reactive species such as nitric oxide (NO). In this sense, melatonin, an antioxidant indolamine, can be an alternative to counteract these damages and promote periodontal healing. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of subgingival melatonin as an adjunct in the treatment of periodontitis. 6 patients with chronic periodontitis were selected; The sample was divided into the control side where scaling and root planing (RAR) were performed and the experimental side (RAR + plasma gel with melatonin). Gingival crevicular fluid (FCG) samples and probing depth measurements were taken. Post evaluations were made at 15 and 45 days. A descriptive analysis was carried out and the student's T test was used. Finding that NO levels decreased in the experimental group from 7.02 ± 3.29 µM to 2.51 ± 0.84 µM, with respect to the control group 2.28 ± 0.72 µM to 3.05 ± 1, 02 µM at 15 and 45 days respectively; the mean probing depth for the experimental group was 6.13mm to 3.80mm and for the control group 6.10mm to 4.50mm at the beginning and end of treatment. Local melatonin produces clinical changes in periodontal tissues with decreased nitrite levels in the experimental group, thus enhancing the effects of mechanical therapy.periodontitis; melatonin; antioxidant; nitric oxide
