D'Orazio; Alimar BenítezThe present study examined the influence of demographic characteristics, relational style and patient satisfaction on adherence to treatment. The sample was 37 physicians and their patients (N = 141): 30 diabetics, 49 with cardiovascular problems, 18 with cancer, 32 with respiratory illness and 12 with gastro-intestinal diseases. IWe evaluated, from the perspective of the doctor and patient, the adherence and relational style. Patients also evaluated satisfaction with medical treatment. We did not find any effect of physician’s age and gender, nor the number of hours of work per week, average time spent in consultation and specialty on both adherence measures. Two regression analysis were conducted. In the first one, adherence from the perspective of the patient was used as the dependent variable, resulting the style relational perceived by the patient as the sole predictor (R2 =.15). In the second analysis, the dependent variable was adherence determined by the physician. In this case the significant predictors were style relational perceived by the patient and patient satisfaction with medical care (R2 =.24). It was concluded that the doctor-patient relationship seen from the perspective of the patient, and satisfaction with medical care, variables that affect adherence to medical treatment.
