Objective: To discuss the importance of the multidisciplinary team in critical patient care within the ICUs, highlighting the main functions performed by each professional and their role in the integral and humanized care of the patient.Methodology: It was carried out through a narrative literature review, based on articles available in the following databases: SciElo, PubMed, Cochrane and Google Scholar; in addition to textbooks related to the topic addressed. As inclusion criteria, articles were chosen that addressed the theme in question, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, in the period from 1980 to 2023.For the exclusion criteria, articles that deviated from the theme of interest were excluded. Results and Discussion: Multiprofessional care in Intensive Care Units is of paramount importance for the promotion of care, prevention of morbidity and mortality, and administrative organization of the ICU.Therefore, it is necessary to know the functions of each professional and recognize their indispensable character in this dynamic, since an intensive care unit without a multidisciplinary team would be a place of generalized, multifocal injuries that go beyond the scope of the ICUs and would result in material and human losses. Conclusion: The multidisciplinary team, in an intensive care unit, has revolutionized the care of critical patients, this is evidenced by several studies that point to significant reductions in morbidity and mortality and, in addition, show an improvement in the biopsychosocial understanding of each person, inside and outside of the unit.
