This paper presents a numerical model for the analysis of underground structures under effective stresses. The problem is addressed by using a threelineal behaviour law with a progressive strength reduction. The system of equations is solved using the finite differences. First of all the model is presented, then, a few applications to the computation of long term strain of Tunnels and satability of water conduction tunnels in rapid dawdown conditions.

Centrifuge modeling of soil atmosphere interaction using climatic chamber
(Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, 2010) Bernardo Caicedo; Julián Tristancho; Luc Thorel
Soil-atmospheric interaction processes such as infiltration or evaporation can have a significant effect on the behavior of geotechnical structures located near the soil surface. This paper focuses on the drying process of soils due to evaporation. The scaling laws are analyzed and the results of the application of two cycles of heating and cooling on a soil mass are presented. Based on these results, conclusions about the feasibility of reproducing evaporation on centrifuge models are recommended.

The presence of superficial soils of volcanic origin and large man made fills of varying materials, which are supported by more competent soils, is a general characteristic of the Colombian Coffee Growing Region. This paper present results from laboratory tests performed on unaltered samples of volcanic ash soil, the typical ranges of dynamic properties observed and the variation of shear modulus and associated damping with level of strain. It also evaluates the expected dynamic response of representative deposits and presents the results of sensibility analysis of relevant variables. The dynamic response is compared with one of the available accelerographic records for the January 25 1h, 1999 Armenia Earthquake, and the design spectra is proposed for areas with different characteristics.

Experimental Wave-Based Assessment of Liquefaction Resistance for Different Degrees of Saturation
(ASM International, 2023) Fausto Molina‐Gómez; António Viana da Fonseca; Cristiana Ferreira; Bernardo Caicedo
ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of an experimental program carried out in the laboratory aimed at assessing the liquefaction resistance by correlations between longitudinal wave (P-wave) and shear wave (S-wave) velocities (VP and VS) and cyclic stress ratio from triaxial testing (CSRCTx) for different degrees of saturation (Sr). The liquefaction resistance was assessed using a cyclic triaxial apparatus equipped with Hall-effect transducers and bender elements, combining stress-based (large-strain level) and wave-based (small-strain level) approaches. These tests were carried out in soil specimens at relatively high degrees of saturation, which were estimated during testing by VP measurements interpreted using Biot’s theory. The results revealed that, for the same relative density and confinement stress, the S-wave-based approach did not predict the liquefaction resistance well because of the negligible variation in the stress state and soil stiffness for the assessed Sr values, which were above the air-entry value. In turn, the P-wave-based approach effectively predicted the liquefaction resistance increment of the TP-Lisbon sand for different Sr conditions because of the strong dependency of P-wave propagation on the degree of saturation in granular media. This is a consequence of the most relevant factor conditioning the pore pressure buildup in partially saturated sands, e.g., the compressibility of the occluded air bubbles, which can be detected by VP but not by VS.

Lessons of the 25 January 1999 Earthquake in Central Colombia
(SAGE Publishing, 2000) Mauricio Sánchez‐Silva; Luis E. Yamín; Bernardo Caicedo
On January 25, 1999, an earthquake of magnitude M L = 6.1 occurred in central Colombia, which caused 1,200 deaths, 5,000 injuries, more than 250,000 people affected and economic losses estimated at US$1.2 billion. The earthquake left some important lessons that must be taken into account for the management of similar situations in the future. With respect to the behavior of buildings, the soundness and importance of the code of practice for buildings was demonstrated as a tool for the prevention of seismic disasters. The management of the emergency in cities such as Pereira and Armenia showed the need for planning, continued preparedness and mitigation awareness. The importance of the Colombian Prevention and Disaster Attention System (SNPAD) was demonstrated although the need to enhance organizational aspects, citizen awareness and participation was made evident. The characteristics of the disaster reflect a typical situation that can occur in many Latin American cities located in areas of high seismic risk. This article presents the main lessons learned from this event in the light of work performed by the research team for natural disasters from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Universidad de Los Andes.

(Spanish National Research Council, 2018) Juan Manuel Medina; Camilo Villate; Bernardo Caicedo; Luis E. Yamín; Juan F. Correal; Nicolás Estrada; Raul Rincón

The choice of technologies to be used for the construction and maintenance of tertiary roads needs to consider the specific requirements of each project. This includes undertaking a detailed characterization of the land in the areas in which the roads will be built and as well as the climatic conditions of the location. Moreover, the sources of materials available to construct pavement structures should be identified and the possibility of modifying some local materials that do not completely fulfill the current technical specifications should be evaluated in order to turn them into suitable materials. The initial purpose of this article is to highlight several features relating to the selection and use of technologies for tertiary roads that, from an academic perspective, are a priority to guarantee the success of these initiatives. Additionally, the document details two pieces of research that were recently undertaken by Universidad de los Andes addressing the use of non-conventional materials to construct tertiary roads in order to emphasize the role played by research in these types of road projects.
