Prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in diabetic patients
(2007) Bernardo Lombo; Claudia L. Satizábal; César Villalobos; Claudia Tique; William Kattah
History: the different defi nitions of the Metabolic Syndrome of the past ten years, have led to confusions. In October 2005, the American Heart Association (AHA) made some modifi cations to optimize the use of the National Cholesterol Education program’s Adult Treatment Panel III Report (ATPIII) criteria in the daily clinical practice. Objective: determine the prevalence of the Metabolic Syndrome as defi ned by the ATPIII compared to the AHA2005 defi nition in the patients of a third level care institution, diabetes clinic. Material and methods: a cross sectional study. 249 clinical histories between January 2004 and september 2005 were reviewed. The population under study was described and the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome, according to the ATPII and AHA criteria was estimated.. Results: the prevalence of the Metabolic Syndrome according to the ATPIII criteria, was 72, 69% (men 63, 83%, women 78, 06%), whilst using the AHA criteria it was 96, 77% (men 95, 74%, women 96, 77%). 100% of obese and diabetic patients have metabolic syndrome according to the AHA criteria. Conclusions: the population studied presents a high prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome taking into account the ATPIII and AHA criteria. Not all diabetic patients have that conditions, however, all diabetic and obese patients show this syndrome. Both criteria are clinically easy to apply but the AAHA criteria identify a higher proportion of patients with this pathology. (Acta Med Colomb 2007; 32: 9-15).

(2006) Bernardo Lombo; César Villalobos; Claudia Tique; Claudia L. Satizábal; Carlos A Franco A
Previous history: different definitions for metabolic syndrome have been done during the last five years, generating confusion. In October 2005 the American Heart Association (AHA) proposed some recommendations and modifications in order to optimize the use of the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III Report (ATP III) criteria. Objective: determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome as defined by ATP III in comparison with the AHA 2005 definition, in patients from the Hypertension Clinic in the Bogota Santa Fe Foundation University Hospital. Materials and methods: retrospective cross-sectional study. 550 medical records from the period between January 2004 and September 2005 were reviewed. The population to be studied was described and the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome according to the ATP III and the AHA criteria was estimated. Results: according to the ATP III criteria, the syndrome's prevalence was 27.3% (19.29% males and 30.05% females), while according to the AHA criteria, it was 75.9% (77.9% males and 75.25% females). Conclusions: the population studied showed a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome according to the ATP III and AHA criteria. The AHA criteria identify a greater proportion of patients with this pathology and are more useful for diagnosing individuals at risk, so that strategic therapeutics, changes in lifestyle and modification of risk factors may be implemented earlier.
