Item type: Item , BALDÍOS Y CERCAMIENTOS EN LA ALDEA GLOBAL DE LA CIENCIA(Universidad de Los Andes, 2005) Clemente Forero PinedaDuring the past decade scientific public spaces have gradually narrowed, particularly those regarding scientific information. Scientific knowledge has been slowly retained in a corporative way. This article examines the historical analogy between the tragedies of the pre-modern village wastelands and the contemporary scientific global village wastelands of knowledge. Here criticism towards global village utopias has particular validity and erudition. Intellectual property protection embraces multiple scientific discoveries. Access to scientific communication is uneven between industrialized countries and those still developing. In Latin American countries one can perceive some global scientific communities that coexist with others centered on local life, as well as a generalized problem of population's access to scientific knowledge.Item type: Item , Innovation patterns and intellectual property in SMEs of a developing country(LA Referencia, 2011) Clemente Forero Pineda; Daniella Laureiro Martinez; Alejandra MarínBased on empirical results, this article reopens the discussion about the relationship between intellectual property and innovation in developing countries.intellectual property grants a monopoly over the commercial exploitation of innovations.ex ante, this monopoly may promote innovation but ex post it may become a disincentive to diffusion and subsequent innovation.after reviewing the terms of the debate in the classical and current literature, we address two empirical issues: What patterns of intellectual property behavior coexist among the small and medium enterprises (smes) of a developing country (Colombia) and how these patterns relate to the innovation performance of these firms.Item type: Item , The quest for visibility of scientific journals in Latin America(Wiley, 2010) Catalina Estrada‐Mejia; Clemente Forero PinedaABSTRACT This article studies the strategies for visibility of some of the most outstanding publications from Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Colombia, and the relationship between open access and the visibility of these journals. By means of in‐depth interviews with the editors, we explored their indexing and circulation strategies and examined certain organizational and contextual variables that may have helped them to remain in circulation. We also considered whether a combination of electronic publication and open access to the contents of the journals have increased the visibility of science from these developing countries. When these journals were not available electronically, even if they were distributed at no cost, their distribution was necessarily selective, and one could not properly speak of open access; once they were put on the Web, however, they became widely available at no cost to the reader. The editors' views on open access are also explored.Item type: Item , The relationship between perceptions of insecurity, social capital and subjective well-being: Empirical evidences from areas of rural conflict in Colombia(Elsevier BV, 2010) Eduardo Wills Herrera; Luz Elena Orozco; Clemente Forero Pineda; Oscar Pardo; Veneta Andonova
