A Motivational Model for Understanding Moral Action and Moral Development
(SAGE Publishing, 1994) Cristina Villegas de Posada
The neglected topic of moral action and the explanations given for such actions, with their shortcomings, are discussed. To avoid these limitations a new model is offered which integrates personal and situational variables, wherein motivation for moral action is the result of the interaction among moral motives, expectations about costs/benefits, and expectations about outcomes for self-evaluation. The numerical values for these variables are defined and support for this model is given through a reanalysis of Kohlberg's stages and some data from other researchers.

Moral Reasoning and Personal Behavior: A Meta-Analytical Review
(SAGE Publishing, 2015) Cristina Villegas de Posada; Elvia Vargas Trujillo
The meta-analysis examined the effect of moral development on 4 domains of action (real life, honesty, altruism, and resistance to conformity), and on action in general. The database, comprised by 151 studies across 71 years, stemmed from a previous narrative synthesis conducted by Blasi (1980) , updated with studies published up to 2013. Results showed that (a) moral development was significantly related to action in general and to each domain, (b) the effect sizes were similar for altruism, real life, and resistance to conformity, with coefficients higher than r = .20, (c) the effect size for honesty was lower than for the other 3 types of behaviors, and (d) demographic or methodological variables did not affect the association between moral development and action. Discussion centers on similarities among domains of action, perfect and imperfect duties, and the need for other constructs to account for moral action.

Motives for the enlistment and demobilization of illegal armed combatants in Colombia.
(American Psychological Association, 2009) Cristina Villegas de Posada
This study explores and compares the motives for the enlistment and demobilization of illegal armed combatants in Colombia, members of guerrillas, and paramilitary groups. An exploratory principal-axis factor analysis was conducted on survey responses of 682 ex-combatants. Four factors emerged for the enlistment: fun and adventure, economic safety, retaliation, and promises. Six first-order factors explained demobilization: survival, physical–psychological safety, civilian safety, justice, self-determination, and belongingness. Factoring of first-order demobilization factors yielded two higher order factors: safety and social relationships. Logistic regression analyses revealed significant group differences in economic safety, promises, physical–psychological safety, justice, and self-determination. Implications for the prevention of enlistment and the promotion of demobilization are discussed.

Some Problems in Use of the Moral Judgment Test
(SAGE Publishing, 2005) Cristina Villegas de Posada
The Moral Judgment Test has been widely used in evaluation of moral development; however, it presents some problems related to the trait measured, reliability, and validity of its summary score (C-index). This index reflects consistency in moral judgment, but this construct is different from moral development as stated by Kohlberg. Therefore, users interested in the latter evaluation should refer to other indexes derived from the test. Some of the analyzed problems could be partially corrected with more theory and research on moral consistency as a component of moral competence.
