    Ectopic pregnancy is an important cause of maternal morbidity and mortality during the first trimester of pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the implantation of the embryo occurs outside the uterus. Approximately 90% of ectopic pregnancies are located at the fallopian tube; however, those with extra-tubal location are associated with greater morbidity. The surgical treatment of choice is laparoscopic surgery. In interstitial ectopic pregnancy, treatment may involve total resection of the tube (salpingectomy) or tissue dissection of the ectopic pregnancy with preservation of the fallopian tube (salpingostomy).
