Metabolic diseases predispose to development of candidiasis of the oral mucosa (CMB); the most common species is Candida albicans. The objective of this study was determine the clinical and microscopic characteristics of Candida albicans in patients with diabetes type 1 (T1DM) attending the Endocrinology Service of the Hospital of Pediatrics Maracaibo, Venezuela. We conducted a descriptive research. The sample consisted of 30 patients between 4-17 years old with T1DM. All patients with or without injury, sample was taken by scraping the oral mucosa, performing filamentation tests, sugar fermentation and physiological tests of assimilation of carbohydrates. The 16.5% did not present any clinical manifestation. Microscopically, 10% were negative, 16.7% had blastoconidias, the 3.3% hyphae and blastoconidias, 6.7% filaments and 63.3% only bacteria. The species identified in the group of patients with T1DM were 20% Candida albicans, 6.7% C. krusei, 3.3% C. membranifaciens, 10% C. parapsilopsis, 3.3% C. guilliermondii and 56.7% had no growth.
