Item type: Item , Alcances y obstáculos de la accountability mediática en América Latina tras la Tercera Ola de la democracia(Universidad de Medellín, Sello Editorial, 2017) Francisco Javier Tagle Montt; Francisco Javier Tagle MonttOne of the most classic normative functions of media in democracies is to be vigilant of power, both to serve as defenders of the citizens and for the public opinion to make correct decisions. This paper discusses from a critical perspective the accountability of the media in Latin America from the Third Wave of Democracy up to date, which has been important in denouncing and investigating certain cases of political corruption, but has been limited for two reasons: the first is the high concentration of ownership of regional media systems, have led to a very low level of informative pluralism which calls into question the true scope and intentions of the surveillance that the media can carry out of power and its contribution to democracy. On the other hand, the second reason is the reforms carried out in recent years by the leadership of some progressive or populist governments that have not created a proper environment for this function, and on the contrary, have provided shortcomings for the freedom of information, a basic principle for media accountability. As a conclusion, this paper reflects on the importance of promoting informative pluralism and freedom of expression as the basis of media surveillance of power in the Latin American region.Item type: Item , Corruption and media surveillance of power in Argentina and Peru: The coverage of Clarín and El Comercio during the vaccination scandals against COVID 19(OberCom (Observatorio da Comunicação), 2024) Francisco Javier Tagle Montt; R.F. Item type: Item , How different patterns of online participation reflect internal, external, and online efficacy: the case of Chile(Routledge, 2025) Sebastián Rivera; Pedro Fierro; Marcelo Santos; Francisco Javier Tagle Montt; Patricio NaviaItem type: Item , Los marcos de los noticieros televisivos y la segunda pantalla en Twitter y Facebook: Escándalo Pacogate en Chile(2021) Francisco Javier Tagle Montt; Juan José Guerrero Cortés; María Paz Vial CerdaBased on the Pacogate corruption case, which affected the Chilean police during 2017, this research explores, using an exploratory methodology and a mixed methodology, the frameworks of the main Chilean television news and the comments that followed on Facebook and Twitter. Through the frames proposed by Entman (2012) on how the media frame corruption, it is postulated, as part of the same media phenomenon, that while the news programs promoted with their frameworks a definition and explanation of the case, the opinions of social networks not only were polarized, but they also gave a moralizing andcritical dimension to what happened.
