The present morphometric and gravimetric study was carried out on 6 adult specimens of Odocoileus virginianus (white-tailed deer), three females and three males at the locality of El Tibisi, which is administrated by the Integral Forest Company of Minas Municipality. The parameters (length of the ears, length of the body, thoracic perimeter and body height) in each specimen were measured with a 1.5-meter-long measuring tape. The body mass (net weight) was registered with a 100 |kg| scale. The age of each specimen was determined by measuring the wear away of the teeth. The morphometric and gravimetric data of the males and females from the locality were compared with those described by different authors for this species at their places of origin. Moreover, males and females from the locality were compared among themselves, these, in turn, were compared to an equal number of males and females of similar ages from Guanahacabibes peninsula. It was verified that the morphometric and gravimetric data of the white-tailed deer from the locality match the range proposed for the species in Cuba and in their places of origin. There are significant differences: in the thoracic perimeter and the weight of the males and females from the locality of Tibisi; and in the length of the body and height of the body of the males and females from the localities of Guanahacabibes and Tibisi.

Experiences of the museum of natural history in the integral formation of the students of forest engineering
(2015) Rosmery Martínez Naranjo; Tamara Abrante Hernández; Yenisey Cimero Labrador; Gilberto Barrera Ramos
The Forest engineering developsthe curriculum strategies: environmental formation, based between their modes of action for evaluation and conservation in forest ecosystems, which has an irreplaceable role contributing to balance and improve the environment in general in this context where a close relationship with the Museum of Natural History is established .In this investigation the authors highlight the action plan arising from the strategy of cultural promotion of the activities of the Museum «Tranquilino Sandalio de Noda» directed to students of Forestry at the University of Pinar del Río.In the research theoretical methods were used: dialectic materialism; the historical and logical and modeling; among the techniques are the survey, in-depth interview and group interview. The results include a plan of action and the use of existing units in different rooms and teaching materials, taking as an example the birds that by their diversity have a systematic use in educational activities. These actions will increase the students' participation in museum activities and thus, cultural enrichment, their awareness and sensitivity on environmental issues will be facilitated by the appreciation of the natural heritage values that are represented there, with proposals departing from the exploration and use of the life experience of students, in which an active, transformer and autotransformer learning will be promoted.

Floristic treasures of Pinar del Rio at the Graden Hall in the Natural History Museum «Tranquilino Sandalio de Noda»
(2015) Tamara Abrante Hernández; Fernando Rey Martínez; Leonardo Ramírez Medina; Yenisey Camero Labrador; Gilberto Barrera Ramos
The Garden Hall at the Natural History Museum «TranquilinoSandalio de Noda» an institution belonging to ECOVIDA, allows visitors to enjoy the floristic treasures of the Pinar del Rio province ecosystems. As a result of the investigation project funded by the National Environment Fund of Cuba a complete restoration of the exhibition halls was implemented, developing an environment that features ancient ecosystems and showing the evolution of the Planet Earth. Therefore it was necessary to renovate and allocation of natural vegetation representing that period of the evolution. To reinforce the environmental education program it was put into practice a new didactic concept, a museologic and museographic script was conceived as a scientific and methodological document as well as the implementation of a training program for the museum guides and it was implemented a program of environmental education for the schools in the local community. As a result, the restored Garden Hall at the Museum became in a education and didactic toll allowing public to appreciate the natural floristic treasures of the province, improving their environmental culture, concern and sensibility.

With 26 described bats species, Cuba has the biggest living collection of this group in the Caribbean. The bats represent more than 2/3 parts of the Cuban mammals’ fauna, for what reason the efforts to get their protection would guarantee the conservation of the most Cuban mammals. The main objective of this work was to increase the conservation ex situ of the bat fauna of Pinar del Rio, by means of the creation of a bats collection at the Natural History Museum “Tranquilino Sandalio de Noda”, as a new tool of assessing cultural and scientific extension for local public. The collected works incorporated to the museum collections 24 specimens of the order Chiroptera, being represented different species and development phases. The specimens were classified taxonomically and grouped on 5 Families and 11 species, all residents of Pinar del Rio province. The materials used as scientific support of the exhibitions are to the service of the public at the Museum´s library. The incorporation of 11 living bats species, inhabitants of Pinar del Rio, it will be used as complement for the Museum fossil bats collection, aspect that will increase their attractiveness and values on the scientific consuls and exhibitions.
