Chaparro; Rodrigo Aguayo; Ignacio De la RivaWe describe a new species of Hyalinobatrachium from the Amazonian slopes of the Andes in Peru and Bolivia on the basis of morphological, bioacoustic and genetic characteristics. Hyalinobatrachium carlesvilai sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species of Hyalinobatrachium by the combination of the following characters: (1) truncate snout in dorsal and lateral view; (2) white pericardium; (3) enameled dorsal, tarsal and cloacal folds; (4) hand webbing formula III 2 – – 1 + IV; (5) iris cream; (6) advertisement call consisting of a single, frequency-modulated note with a pulsed section followed by a tonal section. The new species had been previously identified as Hyalinobatrachium munozorum and H. bergeri. The advertisement call of the new species was previously assigned to H. bergeri. Here we describe the previously unknown call of Hyalinobatrachium bergeri. Additionally, we study the taxonomic status of H. lemur and H. pellucidum and place the former as synonym of the later. The new species differs from other species of the group by having regularly warty dorsal skin, a small tympanum, slightly enlarged, rounded digit discs, and uniformly dark brown coloration. Delgado; Marcos Vaira; Mauro Teixeira; Rodrigo Aguayo; Ignacio De la RivaWe revisit species diversity within Oreobates (Anura: Strabomantidae) by combining molecular phylogenetic analyses of the 16S rRNA amphibian barcode fragment with the study of the external morphology of living and preserved specimens. Molecular and morphological evidence support the existence of 23 species within Oreobates, and three additional candidate species (Oreobates sp. [Ca JF809995], Oreobates sp. [Ca EU368903], Oreobates cruralis [Ca EU192295]). We describe and name three new species from the Andean humid montane forests of Departamento Cusco, southern Peru: O. amarakaeri New Species from Río Nusinuscato and Río Mabe, at elevations ranging from 670 to 1000 m in the Andean foothills; O. machiguenga, new species, from Río Kimbiri (1350 m), a small tributary of the Apurimac River, in the western versant of Cordillera Vilcabamba; and O. gemcare, new species, from the Kosñipata Valley at elevations ranging from 2400 to 2800 m. The three new species are readily distinguished from all other Oreobates by at least one qualitative morphological character. Three species are transferred to Oreobates from three genera of Strabomantidae: Hypodactylus lundbergi Pristimantis crepitans, and Phrynopus ayacucho (for which the advertisement call, coloration in life, and male characteristics are described for first time). Oreobates simmonsi is transferred to the genus Lynchius. Hylodes verrucosus is considered a junior synonym of Hylodes philippi. In addition, H. philippi is removed from the synonymy of O. quixensis and considered a nomem dubium within Hypodactylus. The inclusion of Phrynopus ayacucho in Oreobates extends the ecological range of the genus to the cold Andean puna. Oreobates is thus distributed from the Amazonian lowlands in southern Colombia to northern Argentina, reaching the Brazilian Atlantic dry forests in eastern Brazil, across an altitudinal range from ca. 100 to 3850 m.Item type: Item , An assessment of the taxonomic validity of three species of marsupial frogs (Anura: Hemiphractidae: Gastrotheca) from the Yungas of Bolivia based on external morphology and cranial osteology(Q15088586, 2021) Claudia Lansac; Rodrigo Aguayo; Ignacio De la RivaThe genus Gastrotheca (Anura: Hemiphractidae) is a group of marsupial frogs particularly diverse in Andean regions. Several taxonomic studies of this genus have been conducted in the humid cloud forestsor Yungasof the Andean eastern slopes of central Bolivia (departments of Cochabamba and Santa Cruz). Yet, the distinction among three species that occur sympatrically in these forests, G. lauzuricae (proposed as a junior synonym of G. coeruleomaculatus in 2015), G. piperata, and G. splendens, remains unclear since the morphological characters that purportedly support their differentiation are variable and partly shared among them. We have carried out external morphological studies, including multivariate morphometric analyses, to assess how they support the taxonomic status of these three species. We also evaluated characters of the cranial osteology of a sample of six individuals using micro CT-scanning. Principal component and linear discriminant analyses resulted in a great overlap among the putative species. Cranial osteological comparisons did not reveal highly significant differences among them, but suggested that different degrees of hyperossification could be related to the developmental state of individuals. Our results indicate that most morphological and osteological reported differences between the three species likely represent intraspecific variation. Thus, we propose that the three nominal species belong to a single biological entity, for which the name Gastrotheca splendens (Schmidt, 1857) has priority. We also restrict the name Gastrotheca coeruleomaculatus (Werner, 1899) to externally similar congeneric populations from the Yungas forests of department of La Paz, but highlighting the need of a detailed evaluation of their taxonomic identity.Item type: Item , Assessing the taxonomic status of tropical frogs through bioacoustics: geographical variation in the advertisement calls in the Eleutherodactylus discoidalis species group (Anura)(Oxford University Press, 2008) José M. There are currently 266 species recorded, but this number will increase with the addition of many new country records and the description of species new to science, especially within Andean Craugastoridae. Deforestation, habitat destruction (mostly due to agriculture), water pollution, and chytridiomycosis are the main causes of amphibian declines in Bolivia. Andean frogs are much more affected than lowland species. Infection by the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis is widespread. Forest species of the Andean genus Telmatobius have disappeared from known sites and some other Andean taxa have declined severely. Here, we revise the International Union for Conservation of Nature conservation status categories for some species of anurans. Public awareness is increasing thanks to different local initiatives addressing projects to protect Bolivian amphibians.Item type: Item , New Species of Ischnocnema (Anura: Leptodactylidae) from the Andes of Bolivia(The Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles, 2005) José M. Padial; Steffen Reichle; Ignacio De la RivaA new species of Ischnocnema is described from cloud forests in the Andes of northwestern Bolivia (La Paz Department). The new species can be distinguished from all other Ischnocnema except Ischnocnema sanctaecrucis by the presence of a pale sacral stripe from the level of the caudal tip of the coccyx to the level of the sacrum, well-developed occipital and sacral folds, rounded narrow terminal discs 1.3 times as wide as the corresponding phalange, and dorsal skin moderately warty. It can be distinguished from I. sanctaecrucis, also of the Bolivian cloud forests, by having head longer than wide, well-marked occipital and sacral folds, longer subacuminate to rounded snout, ventral regions mostly cream with little brown mottling, and dorsal region without reddish to scarlet mottling or spots. The new species shares some characteristics with other species of Ischnocnema and members of the Eleutherodactylus discoidalis group, and it appears closely related to I. sanctaecrucis.Item type: Item , Nuevas citas de Eleutherodactylus Duméril y Bibron, 1841 (Anura, Leptodactylidae) para Bolivia(Spanish National Research Council, 2004) José M. Padial; Lucindo Gonzáles; Steffen Reichle; Rodrigo Aguayo; Ignacio De la RivaEn este trabajo se publican los primeros registros de cinco especies del género Eleutherodactylus (Anura, Leptodactylidae) para Bolivia: E. altamazonicus en los Departamentos de Pando y La Paz; E. carvalhoi en Cochabamba; y E. ockendeni, E. skydmainos y E. zimmermanae en Pando. Además, se aportan las primeras citas de E. cruralis para el Departamento de Pando, de E. danae para Beni y La Paz, de E. platydactylus para Beni, de E. toftae para Pando y La Paz y de E. ventrimarmoratus para La Paz. La diversidad conocida de Eleutherodactylus en Bolivia es de 25 especies, aunque los problemas taxonómicos sin resolver, las especies en descripción y el alto número de especies aún no citadas que se considera probable encontrar, hacen que aún desconozcamos la verdadera diversidad de este género en Bolivia.Item type: Item , Primera cita de Leptodactylus ocellatus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Amphibia, Anura, Leptodactylidae) en Bolivia y comentarios sobre especies próximas(Spanish National Research Council, 1999) Ignacio De la Riva; Mayra MaldonadoSe revisa y discute la distribución de Leptodactylus ocellatus, L. chaquensis y L. macrosternum en Bolivia. Mientras que, morfológicamente, L. chaquensis y L. ocellatus se diferencian fácilmente, L. chaquensis y L. macrosternum son imposibles de distinguir. Leptodactylus ocellatus se encuentra en la parte boliviana de la cuenca del río Paraguay, aunque de momento se conoce solamente de una localidad, que se cita aquí por primera vez. Leptodactylus chaquensis habita en el Chaco, pero se deconoce hasta dónde penetra en el Cerrado. No se conocen los límites de las áreas de distribución y posibles zonas de solapamiento de L. chaquensis y L. macrosternum.Item type: Item , Revised distribution, phenotypic variation and conservation status of Liolaemus fittkaui (Squamata: Liolaemidae), a lizard endemic to the Andes of Central Bolivia(University of São Paulo, 2016) Octavio Jiménez‐Robles; Pablo Butron-Galvez; Rene Carpio Real; Ignacio De la RivaO lagarto raro e endêmico da Bolívia Liolaemus fittkaui foi considerado extinto na localidade dos parátipos. Atualmente a espécie está classificada como Vulnerável. Discutimos a credibilidade da suposta localidade dos paratipos, assim como o evento de extinção relatado. As observações apresentadas evidenciam que a distribuição de L. fittkaui é mais ampla do que havia sido relatada, estendendo-se quase 100 km ao longo das regiões altas da Cordilheira de Tiraque (Províncias de Chapare, Tiraque e Carrasco). A espécie mantém populações em áreas em que seu habitat está bem-preservado, algumas delas encontradas dentro dos limites do Parque Nacional Carrasco. Essa nova informação seguindo os critérios da IUCN, indica que a categoria Vulnerável é adequada para o estado de conservação de L. fittkaui. Outros registros da província Arque pertencem a Liolaemus variegatus e a uma espécie da série de L. montanus. Descrevemos a variação do padrão de coloração ventral dos machos; diferentemente do ventre esbranquiçado originalmente descrito, os machos parecem ser polimórficos, apresentando coloração branca, amarela, vermelha e combinações intermediárias. A distribuição de L. fittkaui e de suas formas de coloração ventral reflete uma distribuição espacialmente fragmentada na qual a evolução intraespecífica poderia resultar em uma estrutura genética marcada. A persistência de L. fittkaui e de outros endemismos confinados às regiões altas andinas parece depender da preservação dos campos da puna, um ecossistema geralmente sub-representado nos esforços de conservação.Item type: Item , Tests of biogeographic hypotheses for diversification in the Amazonian forest frog, Physalaemus petersi(Elsevier BV, 2007) W.
