    Valoración de los Indicadores Pronósticos MELD SCORE y Child Pugh, en Pacientes con Hemorragia Digestiva Secundaria a Hipertensión Portal

    Objectives: To determine the short and long term efficacy of the survival prognostic indicators, MELD score and Child Pugh, in patients with hemmorage due to portal hyptertension and hepatic cirrhosis.\nMethods: A retrospective analysis over time, descriptive, comparative, and observational in approach. Researched at the from Cochabamba\nfrom January, 2006 to December, 2010. A follow up was done on all patients until death or until the last known date of survival.\nResults: During the determined time period, 228 patients admitted to the Instituto Gastroenterológico Boliviano-Japonés were included\nin the study. These were diagnosed with gastrointestinal bleeding and portal hypertension. The average age was 54.6±38 years. The overall mortality was 49%. From the total number of patients, 67 (29%) died during the first episode of bleeding. Mortality within six weeks since the first episode of bleeding was 91 patients (40%) and mortality after six weeks was 113 patients (47%). Peak mortality was observed 3 months after the first hemorrhage episode.\nConclusions: The MELD score and classification of Child Pugh are useful and precise prediction models for determining fatality risk during the short and long term for patients presenting hemorrhage due to portal hypertension. Age can also be considered a reliable prognostic indicator of mortality.
