Oral health must be analyzed considering the conditioning factors, the health-disease process, the social response to health events, for developing later the identification and prioritization of health problems. Objective: describe oral health in the Rangel municipality, Mérida state, Venezuela. Method quantitative approach, descriptive type, non-experimental design, retrospective cross-sectional; institutional information was collected according to the established Oral Health Situation Analysis (ASISB), geographic, demographic, basic services, social and economic education, oral mortality and morbidity, curative, rehabilitative oral health program activities, preventive and health promotion, to make proposals later, based on the problems encountered. In addition, a preventive program was applied in an educational institution with 53 students. Results: the most common dental mortality was dental caries (80.5%), the morbidity with the highest number of cases was dental caries (1181), followed by malocclusions (238). In the sample before the application of the preventive program, a DMFT of 3.5 was obtained and after 3.08. Regarding the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (IHOS), it was determined in the pretest, feminine (0.71) masculine (0.89), while in the posttest, feminine (0.43), and masculine (0.45). The need to take into account the ASISB to carry out activities for the prevention of oral diseases and promotion of oral health is concluded; and thus improve the performance of the healthcare activity.

This is a microbiological study of the bacteria in endodontic disease that is associated inflammation in the periapical tissues. The goal of the microbiological analysis of samples from root canals) was to improve the clinical management of pulp-periapical infections. Specifically, the investigators sought to determine the prevalence of Enterococcus faecalis in samples from endodontic patients and its susceptibility profile to ampicillin, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and vancomycin. Data for this observational-descriptive study was collected via probabilistic sampling from patients undergoing endodontic treatment at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Los Andes (ULA). Thirty-two (32) samples obtained from root canals were analyzed in the Roberto Gabaldon laboratory at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Bioanalysis, ULA. The recovered strains of Enterococcus faecalis were then tested to determine resistance profile. The results showed a 12.5% prevalence of E. faecalis, with an observed high resistance to ciprofloxacin but susceptibility to vancomycin. The results indicate that indiscriminate or improper use of these agents may cause complications in patients due to antimicrobial-resistant strains of Enterococcus faecalis that may compromise the efficacy of endodontic treatment.
