(National University of Distance Education, 2013) Javier Álvarez‐Gálvez
In order to obtain a better understanding of the change of opinions and attitudes of the Spanish toward immigrants (Cea D'Ancona, 2004, 2007), this study analyzes the evolution of the media discourse referring to immigration in three Spanish newspapers: El Pais, El Mundo and La Vanguardia (2000-2008). In this work, a novel technique of semantic content analysis is applied to detect significant shifts in this discourse. The results show clear evidences of the evolution of the discourse regarding the immigration and its association with security issues and the demand for political solutions.

(Complutense University of Madrid, 2014) Javier Álvarez‐Gálvez; Juan Francisco Sánchez; José Antonio Muñiz; Javier Lozano Delmar
The growing availability of online information highlights the need of techniques for the study of large volumes of textual data. This paper examines some possibilities of automatic techniques for textual analysis (text mining) to the field of social sciences and, specifically, to communications studies. In this manuscript, we present a case study to show in an applied manner how these methods and techniques for text analysis can be used for automatic contentcharacterization and description of textual framing in newspaper articles.

Objective

The aim of this research is to identify and analyze the measures for the assessment of stressful life events created/adapted for its use in Spanish adult population, published in national and international literature, with a focus on psychometric properties and its association with health measures.

Methods

A systematic review was carried out to identify all instruments identified through searches of MEDLINE; ProQuest Health and Medical Complete; ProQuest Psychology Journals; PsycARTICLES; PsycINFO; Psicodoc; OpenSIGLE from inception until 31 January 2016. Two independent researchers assessed the eligibility criteria of all articles, subtracted data and assessed its psychometric properties.

Results

Twelve measures, which satisfied the inclusion criteria, were selected. The measures showed a large heterogeneity. Most of them did not include any information on its psychometric properties or needed to provide further data, since a few of them assessed its test-retest stability and/or internal structure. The questionnaires created or adapted by González de Rivera y Morena (1983), Sandín y Chorot (1987), Fernández y Mielgo (1992), Gracia y Herrero (2004), and Motrico et al. (2013) showed significant associations with health variables.

Discussion

Further research is needed to clarify the association of these instruments with mental and physical health measures, which would facilitate its clinical application. These results are very useful in order to select a measure for the assessment of stressful life events in clinical practice and research in Spain.

This paper analyses the association between TV news consumption and public attitudes towards immigration. A multi-level model is used to study the complex relationship between TV news consumption, how the media treat immigration and public attitudes towards minority groups based on a survey of university students. Multi-level analysis results show the impact of aggregate consumption of TV news on the perception of the current immigration phenomenon and the cognitive/affective components of attitude. It also demonstrates the usefulness of this analytical approach for understanding the processes that describe the relationship between the media and attitudes towards immigration.
