(2012) A G Leylan Arellano; Jenyfer Torres; Ruth Vivas

(2012) Jenyfer Torres; Ruth Vivas; A G Leylan Arellano
Prosthetic support tissues suffer structural changes due to the continuous use of full dentures. A descriptive correlational study of a cross-section of edentulous patients was conducted with the aim of identifying possible cytological changes in the epithelium of the prosthetic support tissues. Thirty (30) patients of both genders who used total dentures (uni or bimaxilar) and who met the criteria for inclusion in the study were selected. Then, two groups of fifteen (15) patients each were organized. Group 1: those who had worn dentures for more than five (5) years. Group 2: those who had worn dentures for less than five (5) years. After the selected patients signed a consent form, they were accompanied to a dental chair in a medical room, where cytological samples were taken under artificial light and aseptic control measures for the prevention of infection were in place. The results indicated that Group 1 presented 53.33% cytological changes class III, 33.33% class I, and 13.33% class II. Group 2 presented 66.66% class I, 26.66% class II, and 6.66% class III cytological changes. Through the implementaton of Pearson Chi-square, a statistically significant correlation between cytological changes and time of use of the prosthesis was found (p < 0.05). The findings suggest that use of total dentures for more than five years produces statistically significant cytological changes in the epithelium of prosthetic support tissues.
