Believing, Belonging and Understanding: Religion and Philosophy as Narratives and Practice in Adam Smith
    (2023) Jimena Hurtado
Abstract Religion and philosophy satisfy the basic human needs of understanding, belonging, and finding meaning. They provide tranquility of mind and satisfy the desire to be loved and lovable. However, they present their own failings and can counter each other in positive and negative ways, that threaten the communities of beliefs they form and their interactions. An appropriate institutional framework can control the fanaticism and sectarianism that can come with established religion and philosophy.

Bernard Mandeville: Wealth beyond Vice and Virtue
(University of Brasília, 2022) Jimena Hurtado
Bernard Mandeville denounced the moral philosophy of his times, its theoretical and practical dimensions, as elitist and contrary to human nature. The explanations and recommendations derived from this moral philosophy, according to Mandeville, was inadequate to understand and govern commercial society. Mandeville scrutinized existing explanations about human nature, confronted them with what he presented as facts and unraveled their contradictions. This leads to Mandeville’s challenge: accepting things as they are or assuming the responsibility of transformation. This is the challenge I aim at exploring in this paper. We can continue to live in a highly unequal society based upon pride and shame or we can create incentives that will lead to a different calculation of passions in line with a Utilitarian criterion.

Ezequiel Rojas: entre utilitarismo e ideología
(Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, 2015) Jimena Hurtado

JEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU AND KARL MARX: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TWO CRITICS TO THE MARKET ECONOMY
(RELX Group (Netherlands), 2008) Andrés Álvarez; Jimena Hurtado
We present a comparison between the works of two great critics of the market economy: Rousseau and Marx. It shows their similarities and divergences, most important of which is the place they give to economic analysis in their intellectual and political theories. Whereas Marx built his political and scientific criticism on economic analysis, Rousseau believed this analysis could not be the starting point for understanding social organization. Their monetary theories can explain this difference.

Jon Elster, Alexis de Tocqueville. The First Social Scientist
    (Association Œconomia, 2011) Jimena Hurtado
Will we ever speak about Elster’s Tocqueville as we are used to speak about Skidelsky’s Keynes, Winch’s Smith, Hollander’s Ricardo or … Elster’s Marx? Following his lifelong research, Jon Elster presents in this book the political and social thinker that he regards not only as his predecessor, but also, as the title of the book indicates, as the first social scientist: Alexis de Tocqueville. Elster recognizes how contestable this claim of being the first, and particularly, the first social sc...

Lauchlin Currie and Albert O. Hirschman on Development as a Problem of Decision Making
(Association Œconomia, 2019) Andrés Álvarez; Andrés M. Guiot-Isaac; Jimena Hurtado
This paper analyzes L. Currie and A. O. Hirschman’s contributions to development economics in the context of their Colombian experience as foreign experts. We show that the common ideas about the divergences between these authors have overlooked the view they shared of the experts’ role as a triggering factor in development strategy. They both believed experts should facilitate and guide the decision-making process. Using published and archival sources, we show that their experiences as experts in Colombia led them to redefine their ideas and understand the influence of the political economy of development policies on the advice that experts give.

“Out of sight, out of mind”: Social interactions and Smith's asymmetrical sympathy
(Complutense University of Madrid, 2015) Andrés Álvarez; Jimena Hurtado
Growing literature on Adam Smith’s system of sympathy has recovered an enriching view on our understanding of human interactions. Much attention has been placed on the construction of moral and social communities, the process of identification and recognition that Smith presents. But, the features Smith attributes to the intersubjective identifi-cation mechanism of sympathy can also lead to conceive of the possibility of exclusion of some members of a com-munity. The asymmetry of sympathy allows explaining emulation of those seen as more fortunate as well as the exclusion of those perceived as miserable. Through a formal representation we try to illustrate the phenomena of inclusion and exclusion present in intersubjective relations and the construction of communities.

    (2020) Jimena Hurtado
Albert O. Hirschman invites us to take risks and assume possibilism as a way to social change. In this text, I explore this invitation coming from a self-subversive public intellectual, who built his point of view from the practical and theoretical lessons of the past to contribute to the public debate needed to face challenges and opportunities. Collective action is possible when citizens exercise their voice and embrace their responsibility to find temporal arrangements to solve distributive problems without renouncing to their differences, their own beliefs and expectations. The pandemic has brought to the light a standing problem in the region: inequality. We need collective action to overcome the apparent trade-off between health and economics in order to recover our right to decide and live lives worth living.
