A new jumping spider species of the genus Maeota (Araneae: Salticidae: Euophryini), with new faunistic data of the tribe from Colombia
(National University of Colombia, 2016) William Galvis; Juan Sebastián Moreno
A new species of jumping spider of the genus Maeota (Salticidae), M. galeanoae sp. nov., is described and illustrated from the Caribbean state of Magdalena, Colombia. Additionally, the genus Anasaitis is recorded for the first time from Colombia, with the species A. canalis, from the department of Chocó. Moreover, new records are presented for Maeota serrapophysis from the departments of Magdalena, Quindío and Valle del Cauca, Colombia, with individuals from the southern region presenting a slightly different pattern of coloration in which the prosoma, abdomen and legs have a reticulated brown and gray pattern. New faunistic data from Colombia are also presented for the species M. betancuri and Ilargus galianoae. Finally, a distribution map is presented, including new and previously published records for the taxa treated here.

A new species of Cyrtochilum (Orchidaceae: Oncidiinae) from the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia
(2018) Nicolas Gutierrez; P. H. Harding; Stig Dalström; Juan Sebastián Moreno
A new species of Cyrtochilum from the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia is described and illustrated. The new species is most similar to the pink-flowered Cyrtochilum distans but is distinguished by its white and yellow-green flowers with spreading sepals and a pink lip with a basally yellow and apically white callus consisting of two parallel keels (vs. pink lateral sepals that are fused to about half or more of their length and a white callus consisting of two basal and two apical spreading keels).

A new species of Lepanthes (Orchidaceae: Pleurothallidinae) from Colombia with a large and protruding column
(Lankester Botanical Garden, 2017) Juan Sebastián Moreno; Sebastián Vieira-Uribe; Adam P. Karremans
A new species of Lepanthes from the Western Cordillera of the Colombian Andes, characterized by similar triangular sepals with a large and protruding column, is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to Lepanthes pelorostele from Ecuador, but can be distinguished from the latter by having orange and ciliate sepals and larger petals and lip.

Chronicle of a death foretold: Lepanthes nasariana (Orchidaceae, Pleurothallidinae), a newly described high-Andean orchid facing a worst-case climate change scenario
(Pensoft Publishers, 2025) Juan Sebastián Moreno; Angie Tatiana Herrera Cobo; Rubén Darío Palacio; Nicolás A. Hazzi
Newly discovered species are increasingly found to be threatened. For some, their formal description may already foretell their extinction, a phenomenon we here term the "Nasar Effect." This phenomenon is inspired by the tragic fate of Santiago Nasar, the protagonist of Gabriel García Márquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold, whose impending death is known to everyone but himself. The Nasar Effect is particularly evident in climate-vulnerable ecosystems, where species may be projected for extinction based on dramatic climate-driven habitat loss. We illustrate the "Nasar Effect" through the description of a new orchid species, <i>Lepanthes nasariana</i> (Lepanthes subsect. Breves), endemic to the cloud forests and páramos of the Western and Central Andes of Colombia, between 2,800 and 3,600 m elevation. The species inhabits mossy branches in shaded, humid environments and is most similar to <i>L. mefueensis</i>, from which it differs by its oblong-lanceolate leaves, falcate petal lobes, and narrowly ovate lip blades with an inflexed appendix, among other characters. Based on its current extent of occurrence (27,502 km2) and area of occupancy (12,775 km2), <i>L. nasariana</i> is preliminarily assessed as Least Concern (LC) following the IUCN Red List guidelines. However, species distribution models projected to 2090 under the SSP5-8.5 scenario indicate a 96% loss of suitable habitat, which would qualify the species as Critically Endangered (CR) under Criterion A3(c). Without immediate and concerted global efforts to mitigate emissions, <i>L. nasariana</i> exemplifies the potential fate of many species described from climate-vulnerable ecosystems, such as the high Andean mountains, where they may already be on a predestined short path to extinction.

Dos especies nuevas de Pleurothallis y un nuevo nombre para Acronia rinkei
(2017) Alfonso Doucette; Mark Wilson; José Portilla; Andreas Kay; Juan Sebastián Moreno; Kenneth M. Cameron
New species of Pleurothallis from Panama, Pleurothallis anthurioides, and from Ecuador, Pleurothallis kaynagata, are described and illustrated. The new species are distinguished based on their morphological distinctness from similar species. Pleurothallis kaynagata represents a new addition to Pleurothallis sect. Abortivae, which was previously thought to be monotypic. Acronia rinkei is transferred to Pleurothallis and provided with a new name, Pleurothallis neorinkei, and locality data.

(Lankester Botanical Garden, 2018) Luis E. Baquero; Juan Sebastián Moreno; Gabriel A. Iturralde
Abstract. A new species of Lepanthes, closely resembling L. hexapus and L. aguirrei, is described and illustrated. The new species is characterized by bilobed, filiform and curved petals.
