While the literature focuses on testing the impact of demutualization on firm financial performance, little interest has focused on corporate governance restructuring. In this paper, we analyse changes in the composition of boards of directors using a sample of 14 demutualized stock exchanges to better understand the workings behind their successful conversion to for-profit firms. We find that following demutualization, exchanges have decreased board size and appointed more directors politically connected, directors with diversified professional experience and directors with regulatory and international experience. We also document that such corporate governance restructuring has contributed to improving exchange reputation.Item type: Item , ¿Es posible incrementar la motivación por oportunidad de los inmigrantes emprendedores en Europa?(2021) Antonia Mercedes García Cabrera; Ana María Lucía-Casademunt; Laura Padilla AnguloEste estudio analiza los factores que condicionan la motivación por oportunidad del inmigrante emprendedor establecido en 31 países europeos. Se encuentra que la distancia lingüística existente entre los países de residencia y de origen del inmigrante socava su motivación emprendedora por oportunidad. An econometric analysis of the joint effects of 'defensive' and 'strategic restructuring' reveals that, unsurprisingly, downsizing of the physical network has affected financial performance positively. Contrary to widely held beliefs, employment reductions by themselves do not explain improved performance, but controlling for interactions of network reductions and labour downsizing with strategic restructuring measures, employment reductions have a strong positive effect. Lucia‐CasademuntTo promote entrepreneurship among students, academic institutions should focus on developing a positive entrepreneurial personal attitude (EPA), since it is a strong antecedent of entrepreneurial intentions, which in turn predict actual entrepreneurship. Previous research finds that EPA is lower for women than men, which is related to the acknowledged gap between women and men in entrepreneurial activity. The present work builds on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) to examine how nine different entrepreneurship-focused academic activities in school impact on students’ EPA, paying special attention to gender differences. We use a sample of 918 students from a French business school to analyse gender differences in the mechanisms based on ELM central and peripheral routes to promote EPA through academic activities. Post-hoc tests are also performed to explore differences by gender at different academic levels. The results have important implications for academic institutions wishing to promote entrepreneurship since we unpack entrepreneurial education into individual academic activities. In particular, results suggest that students’ gender and academic level should be considered when designing activities to promote entrepreneurship.Item type: Item , Using popular science talks to foster interest in Economics among high school students(University of Valencia, 2025) Javier Sierra; Laura Padilla Angulo; María Jesús Manso Miguel; José‐Ignacio AntónThe declining interest in Economics majors in many countries among high school students and the lack of diversity of undergraduates in this field have recently become a source of concern for the academic community. In contrast with previous research examining nterventions to increase the interest in Economics mostly involving impersonal communication, this work, using a sample of Spanish students, explores the impact of popular science talks targeted at upper-secondary education pupils. Our results suggest that this intervention involving personal interaction with students effectively draws the attention of high school learners to Economics. Although there seems to be no difference in its impact according to the students’ characteristics, the greater diversity of the pupil population in secondary education compared to higher education suggests that this intervention might enhance the diversity of the pool of young people studying Economics.
