    Alteraciones clínicas en mucosa bucal de pacientes portadores de prótesis totales residenciados en el centro “Dr. Ricardo Sergent” (INASS)

    In the last two decades, research issues about the elderly have been presented as emerging topic with great relevance, this population has increased, in response to numerous factors conjugated to sustain a longer life expectancy. This project aims to study, the most frequent alterations in the oral mucosa of geriatric patients of the INASS Residential Social Services Center Dr. Ricardo Sergent”, which carry complete dentures. Major pathologies were evaluated by: age, gender, type, prosthesis condition and need for replacement. 29 elderly complete denture wearers, 15 men and 14 women who underwent a clinical evaluation of the oral cavity, as well as evaluating the state of dental prostheses; 50% had some type of mucosal inflamma- tion and alterations associated with the use of complete prostheses, 40% had estomatitis and 20.7% had Candida albicans also, reasons why strategies to promote oral health in this population are needed.

    PRESENCIA DE ESTOMATITIS SUBPROTÉSICA EN PACIENTES PORTADORES DE PRÓTESIS TOTALES EN LA POBLACIÓN DE LOS NEVADOS, ESTADO MÉRIDA, VENEZUELA

    Absence of comprehensive dental care, misinformation and lack of preventive measures are aggravating factors in the general health condition of patients living in rural populations. The general aim of the present research was to assess the oral status of patients from Los Nevados, a rural community located in the Sierra Nevada of Merida Park State, those patients wore dentures and have been diagnosed with denture stomatitis. It was a descriptive, cross-sectional study in which data collection techniques were structured interview and observation. The sample included 22 patients. Results showed the presence of oral lesions associated with use of dentures and related to denture stomatitis description; it was also noticed the presence of the two stages described in the literature for the disease classification and the possible relationship of factors such as prosthesis hygiene, usage time, usage habits and masticatory efficiency in the development of the disease.
