La saliva: una ventana para el diagnóstico
    (2015) Luis Alonso Calatrava Oramas
Saliva is a glandular secretion of the three pairs of major salivary glands, (parotid, sub mandibular and sublingual), minor salivary glands and gingival fluid. The function of saliva is primarily protective, however it may have others. The severe reduction of its flow not only produces a violent deterioration of oral health, but it has an impact on the weakening of the patients’ life quality. Xerostomy has become more common as life expectation increases. Polypharmacy causes decrease in salivary flow and this condition also occurs in Sjogren's syndrome. The present literature review is about the role of saliva, prevalence of mouth dryness as well as other systemic aspects associated to saliva. The understanding of saliva and its role for health and illness will help to promote a greater awareness among health professionals on the issue, its prevention and treatment
