Introduction: The maxillary expansion is a method used in orthodontic treatment to correct the transverse constriction of the maxilla through the opening of the mid-palatal suture. There are many studies concerning this subject, but a systematic review that synthesizes them was not found; therefore, the purpose of this review is to determine the effectiveness of nonsurgical procedures applied to maxillary expansion. Methodology: The search was conducted in the following sources: Cochrane library, virtual health, electronics, multidisciplinary data bases, academic search engines and open access publishing. The search criteria were applied: filters for types of studies, children participants. Results: The studies found were: clinical trials (40), systematic reviews (7), clinical cases (6), meta-analysis (4), traditional reviews (1), studies of cases and controls (2), obtaining a total of 60 items studied. Maxillary expansion appliances most used and effective were the Hyrax which is cemented, and Haas including acrylic plates, achieving to increase the bone perimeter. Conclusions: The activation of Hyrax is recommended once or twice a day with 0.2 or 0.8mm diameter, Haas 0.4mm 0.2 .Also, is recommended to perform the expansion before the patient has 18 years old,and give clear and precise instructions to the person to activate the device . Further studies on this issue are suggested.
