(2015) Elsy Jerez; Y V Reina Zerpa; Basilia Graterol; María Elena Cáceres; Manuel Molina Barreto; A Susana Arteaga

(2007) Manuel Molina Barreto; Justo Bonomie; B Lorena Dávila; José Leonel Castillo Cáceres; A Susana Arteaga; Nelly Velazco; Sair González
Each one of the members of the dental health professionals group, as well as the patient who goes to an appointment, are exposed to the risks of getting highly infectious diseases; in the last two decades, society has been more aware about the rising and transmission of infectious-contagious diseases. Patients and health workers have shown interest and concern about diseases transmitted by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and by hepatitis B and C virus (HBV and HCV), which has led the dental health team (dentists, dental hygienists) to star putting into practice biosecurity and infection control in the dentist office. Hence the importance of reviewing the latest concepts known to protect ourselves and the patient in dental practice following infection control regulations destined to diminish risk of infectious microorganisms from identified and unidentified sources in the dentist office linked to accidents by exposure to blood and bodily fluids.

The COVID-19 was first reported in China at late December 2019 and was listed as a pandemic on March 19, 2020 by the WHO. The virus protein S, which mediates the entry and fusion process, has been reported to require ACE-2, the angiotensin converting enzyme-2 as an anchoring receptor. ACE-2 is expressed in oral and gingival tissue, epithelial cells and fibroblast in the oral mucosa, making it a high-risk factor for infectious virus susceptibility. On the other hands, the importance of saliva has been reported for its role as a vehicle for the transmission of viral particles, which allows it to be considered as an instrument of potential diagnostic value in the detection of COVID-19. To know the etiology of SARS-CoV-2 and its impact at the oral level, as well as to recognize and execute biosecurity measures for the management of patients in dental clinical practice is the fundamental object of this review, for this reason, a retrospective cross-sectional study with electronic search was carried out through NCBI, Virtual Health Library, Scielo, LILACS and Redalyc. The reports given by the WHO, CDC and Ministries of Health in Latin America are analyzed. The dissemination of information and the adaptation of knowledge in time of pandemic by COVID-19, will protect the health conditions of both, dentist and patient, which is why it is necessary to put biosafety protocols into practice and constantly update them regarding to health care at the clinical and hospital level.

Odontoma compuesto mandibular. Reporte de caso
(2009) Jenair del Valle Yépez Guillén; C José Leonel Castillo; Manuel Molina Barreto
Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumors, usually diagnosed accidentally in radiographic examinations. These lesions are classified as compound and complex odontomas, both types consisting of structures like dental enamel, dentin, cement and pulp tissue. They are found with relative frequency in association with other anomalies, and surgical removal is recommended for both types in order to avoid local complications and recurrences. This paper aims to report the case of a 25 years old male patient, served at the Department of Oral Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Los Andes, who had a routine radiographic examination and presented a mandibular compound odontoma associated with an impacted canine, which was surgically treated. Postoperative controls were successful. The reported case demonstrates the occurrence of oral cavity odontomas, highlighting the relevance of conducting clinical and radiographic examinations for detection and early treatment.
