New information on bird distribution in Bolivia

Recent advances in our understanding of the Bolivian avifauna have been substantial; 1,452 species are now known for the country. This manuscript presents a compilation of records made between 2005 and the present, including records for 27 species that contribute to our understanding of elevational and geographic distributions and status of birds in Bolivia. Among the most noteworthy discoveries are further records of the only recently recorded Coscoroba Swan Coscoroba coscoroba, the first record of the globally threatened Horned Curassow Pauxi unicornis in Santa Cruz for more than a decade, evidence that Scaled Dove Columbina squamata might be becoming established in the east of the country, the second record of South American Painted Snipe Nycticryphes semicollaris in Bolivia, the fifth and sixth Bolivian records of Common Tern Sterna hirundo and the third national record of Purple-throated Cotinga Porphyrolaema porphyrolaema. These findings underscore the need for sustained research and documentation of Bolivia's avifauna.
New observations on the status, occurrence and ecology of birds in Bolivia

We provide new information on the status, occurrence and ecology of birds in Bolivia gathered during seven years of avifaunal surveys (2017–23), with a focus on aquatic birds, as well as regions such as the Chaco, the Yungas, and Pando. We document five new species for Chuquisaca (Quebracho Crested Tinamou Eudromia formosa, Sharp-billed Canastero Asthenes pyrrholeuca, Scimitar-billed Woodcreeper Drymornis bridgesii, Brown Cacholote Pseudoseisura lophotes, Black-crested Finch Lophospingus pusillus), two for Tarija (Rufous-sided Crake Laterallus melanophaius, Red-backed Sierra Finch Idiopsar brachyurus), two for Pando (Uniform Crake Amaurolimnas concolor, Mississippi Kite Ictinia mississippiensis), two for Beni (Rusty-margined Guan Penelope superciliaris, Connecticut Warbler Oporornis agilis), two for Santa Cruz (Cloud-forest Screech Owl Megascops marshalli, Geoffroy's Daggerbill Schistes geoffroyi) and one for Cochabamba (Fiery-capped Manakin Machaeropterus pyrocephalus). Additionally, we provide the first breeding evidence for one subspecies (Patagonian Grebe Podiceps occipitalis occipitalis) and a range-wide elevational maximum for Hauxwell's Thrush Turdus hauxwelli.
Record of Markham's Storm Petrel Hydrobates markhami in La Paz, Bolivia

Markham's Storm Petrel Hydrobates markhami is typically found in pelagic waters off Chile, Peru and rarely Ecuador. We report an exceptional record of a grounded fledgling in La Paz, Bolivia, far from its usual habitat and range, possibly as a result of storms or other climatic factors, >300 km from the nearest breeding colonies in northern Chile. The species breeds in the Atacama Desert, with the young flying west to the sea on fledging, but young of other seabirds can become lost due to relatively poorly understood factors, such as light pollution and, more uncommonly, even human intervention. This is the first record of the species in Bolivia and one of the first records of any Procellariform in the country.
Two new bird species for Bolivia

We report two new species for Bolivia: Biscutate Swift Streptoprocne biscutata and Buckley's Forest Falcon Micrastur buckleyi, which brings the total number of birds known in Bolivia to 1,449. Additionally, we documented the first individuals of the ‘caraguata’ morph of Dark-throated Seedeater Sporophila ruficollis, indicating that it spends its non-breeding season in Bolivia, alongside typical S. ruficollis.
