    Content-Based Conference Scheduling Optimization
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2019) Fabián Castaño; Nubia Velasco; Jimmy Carvajal
A scientific conference is an activity organized by a community of researchers aimed at offering a platform for knowledge sharing and scientific exchange. The planning of a conference includes the creation of the program schedule where decisions about track composition, in terms of talks, and the temporal allocation of those tracks need to be considered. Designing such a schedule represents a difficult task in which aspects as content similarity and the overlapping of similar tracks should be taken into account. In this paper a two-phase solution approach is proposed for helping planners designing schedules. In first place, talks are grouped into tracks upon the basis of talks content. Then, a timetable for the tracks is created by group them over the basis of content similarity, avoiding those with similar content to be scheduled in parallel. Both problems demonstrate to require a considerably computational effort; consequently, advanced algorithmic approaches as column generation and GRASP are exploited with the purpose of finding near-optimal solutions in a short computational time.

Logistics practices in healthcare organizations in Bogota
(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2018) Nubia Velasco; J Monjaras Moreno; Claudia Rebolledo
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the current state of logistics practices in healthcare organizations in Bogota, Colombia. Design/methodology/approach The assessment is based on case study research using open interviews, focused interviews, a questionnaire and direct observations as sources of evidence. Seven Colombian health care settings are analyzed: four public hospitals and three private clinics. Cross-case analysis allows the identification of patterns regarding supply management, inventory management, replenishment and use of information and communication technologies. Findings Manual procedures, poor planning, little recognition from top management and a lack of specialized personnel characterize the current situation. Innovative practices with a potential to improve the efficacy of logistics activities are rare, particularly in public hospitals. Research avenues Future research could replicate this study in other Colombian cities, in order to generalize the results to the whole country. It could also be interesting to document successful and less successful implementations of innovative logistics practices in Colombian hospitals to guide and promote their adoption. Research limitations/implications The small number of cases considered, and the fact that the research is concentrated in one city, limits the generalizability of the results. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is the first to explore the state of healthcare logistics practices in Colombia.

Optimization of the laundry service in a public hospital in Bogotá D.C., Colombia: A case of vehicle routing with split delivery
(2008) Diana Flórez; Silebis Aguirre; Ciro Alberto Amaya; Nubia Velasco
Logistic activities inside a hospital are present in different work areas, and are designed to support other health care related activities. In some hospitals, logistic activities are planned based on the experience of people that are directly involved in them, which leads to question if this is or not, the best way to carry out the planning process. The mixed-integer linear programming model proposed in this paper, is a tool for finding new shift and routing designs for dirty linen (DL) collection in one of Bogotapsilas (Colombia) largest public hospitals, satisfying resources availability constraints and hygiene related conditions.
