Determinación de poblaciones vulnerables en sectores críticos de la Cuenca del Río Rocha en Bolivia
    (2023) Alvizuri-Tintaya; Paola Andrea; Lo-Iacono-Ferreira; Vanesa Gladys
Rivers are ecosystems that are constituted as indicators of environmental quality thanks to the different types of environmental, and socioeconomic services they offer. Due to the constant expansion of cities, the pollution of rivers is becoming increasingly critical, especially in those rivers that cross or are close to urban centers. In developing countries, such as Bolivia, rivers are an accessible and invaluable source of water for use and consumption, so preserving their quality is essential. There are numerous studies of the water quality of the Rocha River carried out by various institutions that verified the increase in contamination in the body of water. However, the vulnerability for populations and ecosystems have not yet been identified for the entire basin. This research compiled and crossed the available information on anthropogenic activities, water quality, and population distribution to expose the impact on water quality and thus identify vulnerable populations in critical sectors of the Rocha River basin. This study is the base for formulating mitigation actions in the identified areas, to reduce the risk to public health and ecosystems. Elaboración de biomateriales a través del aprovechamiento de residuos de café
(2023) Shirley Vega; Garvizu Auza; Vidfa Carolina; Alvizuri-Tintaya; Paola Andrea
Coffee is one of the most popular drinks worldwide. Although the coffee industry is of great economic importance, it is considered an activity that produces a significant environmental impact. According to studies carried out, organic coffee wastes become a pollutant agent due to the presence of caffeine, polyphenols, and tannins, among the most important. This research proposes a methodology for the elaboration of a biomaterial from the mixture of coffee grounds with natural polymers. The study of the physical characteristics of the material and its biodegradability were developed to analyze its applicability. Results reveal a potential for the use of coffee grounds, being a possible solution to its generation in Bolivia, the fifth most important country in terms of coffee production in South America. Keywords: coffee;biomaterial;biodegradability

Estudio de escenarios futuros en una fuente de agua potable, Caso Milluni - Bolivia
(2023) Paola Andrea; Avendaño-Acosta; Abzac; Vanesa Lo-Iacono- Ferreira
Water is a necessary resource for life on earth, therefore, water sources for consumption must be prioritized in their care and preservation. This research takes as a study area the lagoons of the upper part of the Milluni micro-watershed, which supply two important cities in Bolivia, La Paz and El Alto. Various studies have exposed the problem of heavy metal contamination in Milluni due to mining activity in the area. However, corrective actions have not yet been taken to reduce the risk to public health and ecosystems. This study aims to identify possible future temperature and precipitation scenarios for Milluni and to observe the repercussion of the impact of the change on the area's water resources. The main result of this research is to generate specific information on the study area, which facilitates decision-making to address Milluni's water problems. Keywords: water quality;heavy metals;safe water;future scenarios

The formality in property rights: Determinant in the military strategy of armed actors?
    (2008) Velásquez Guijo; Paola Andrea
The appropriation of economic resources may be seen as a means of financing, which influences the conflict’s persistence. In Colombia, land appropriation has been a recurrent strategy for illegal armed groups in order to increase their territorial control and the institutional weakness when defining property rights may facilitate illegal appropriation of these assets. The hypothesis presented in this work is that the informality of property rights positively influences the armed groups’ decision of attacking and, therefore, influences the conflict’s intensity. In order to prove this hypothesis, an econometric model is proposed, which explains the conflict’s intensity through economic, social and institutional indicators at a municipal level. The results suggest that with a greater formality in property rights, the armed attacks by the FARC and the displacement events decreases.
