El futuro de la lengua náhuatl (Nahuatla'tolli)
(Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, 2011) Rudolf van Zantwijk
This article offers a reflection on the future of the Nahuatl language, comparing its current status with that of various European minority languages. After analyzing four categories of minority languages—from endangered dialects to revitalized official languages like Irish—the author argues that Nahuatl resembles regional languages lacking formal standardization. He proposes the development of a national Nahuatl standard based on Classical Nahuatl and central dialects, along with the creation of a Nahuatl language academy and supportive public policies. The author highlights the role of Miguel León-Portilla in promoting Nahuatl and encourages a moderately purist approach to language planning and revitalization
