Abstract Reading encouragement strategies of children’s and young adult literature in basic education Training reading promoters of literary texts (fables, short stories, poetry, cumulative rhymes, puzzles, novels, legends, among others) is one of the main goals of the course Children’s Literature of the undergraduate program in Basic Education at the University of Los Andes, Tachira. Hence, a teaching experience was developed in order to allow students to see themselves as creators and co-creators of reading encouragement strategies of children’s and young adult literature. It took place during semesters A and B, 2010, with about 20 participants per semester. A systematized teaching strategy was applied around the encouragement of literary readings, which was divided into three phases: the first one demanded deep theoretical reflection on the reading process—what reading is, the existing literary genres and which ones are applied (or neglected) at school, and the traditional positions on the promotion and encouragement of reading. The second phase consisted of providing students with a series of reading encouragement strategies so they could count on tools to see themselves as reading promoters. Lastly, the third phase supported the creation of a reading encouragement strategy, as an opportunity to contrast theory and practice. In sum, the proposal allowed participants to, a) approach the concept and origin of children’s and young adult literature, b) develop different strategies of promotion and encouragement of the reading of literature, such as “The radio-soap-opera guys,” “Take a guess,” “The crazy phrase maker,” among others, which served as inspiration for creating new strategies, c) create new strategies for encouraging the reading of literature at school. Keywords: reading strategies, leisure reading encouragement, teacher education.
