Item type: Item , On the Consequences of Overturning Turnover(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1984) Barbara J. Lowery; Barbara S. JacobsenThe possibility that turnover may have a good side has been given increased attention in recent literature. The purpose of this investigation was to study whether turnover, defined as voluntary exit from employment, among newly hired nurses displaces poor performers. Routine performance ratings of 92 leavers and 184 stayers were compared for differences in overall ratings and for ratings on 10 job factor subscales. Results indicated that those who left employment were judged as significantly lower on overall ratings and on 7 of the 10 job factors on which overall ratings were based. The performance factor that best discriminated between leavers and stayers was the variable of interest and motivation, with those leaving being lower on the scale than the stayers. Further study of the performance-turnover relationship and study of other possible consequences of turnover are suggested. Item type: Item , The use of microhaematocrit tubes for the rapid diagnosis of Chagas' disease and malaria(Oxford University Press, 1984) C. Rojas; Lina Marcela Escobar MartínezSUMMARY Plans to improve the milk production ability of the Criollo in Bolivia are outlined. The background problems are stated, and experiments to improve by crossbreeding are described. The Criollo improvement project which makes use of the purebred Criollo was planned in two stages. The first was the attempt to measure the performance of Criollo cows purchased from commercial herds, and milked without their calves. The second stage was the comparison of performance with the results of the crossbred trial. The intentions and plans to progeny test the Criollo bulls are summarized and the hopes of producing bulls for sale and use on temperate breeds of cow are described. The problems encountered in the project are stated, and the results are viewed in the context of work with Criollo in other countries.Item type: Item , Reconciliation of the Sherman Act with federal health-planning legislation: Implied antitrust immunity in the health care field(SAGE Publishing, 1984) Ray S. Greksa; Hilde Spielvogel; Luis Paredes‐Fernández; M Paz-Zamora; Esperanza CáceresThe physical growth of urban Aymara children residing in La Paz, Bolivia (3,600 m) is described and compared with Amerindian children residing at low and high altitudes and with low-altitude U.S. children. The sample consists of 227 males (10.6-19.7 yr) and 219 females (11.2-19.8 yr). The urban La Paz children were taller at all ages than rural high altitude Amerindian children but similar in stature to urban high altitude children from Peru. The variation in stature among the high altitude populations was considerable, amounting to average differences between the tallest and shortest samples of about 10 cm in males and 8 cm in females. In addition, stature in the two urban high altitude samples was similar to that of rural low-altitude Amerindians. This overlapping of the distributions of stature in high- and low-altitude populations could easily confound comparisons designed to determine the effects of hypoxia on physical growth. La Paz Aymara children had considerably smaller chest sizes relative to stature than high-altitude Quechua children. However, the available data indicates that relative chest sizes are similar in Aymara and Quechua adults, suggesting that the process by which large chests are achieved may differ between these Andean populations.Item type: Item , En torno a la educación popular(Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación, 1984) Getino, ElenaTesis que trata sobre la educación que detenta el poder, refleja el mismo estrangulamiento que el desarrollo social. Bydder; Judith M. Hughes; J.M. Pennock; A. Goatcher; J. S. Orr; R. E. Steiner; R. H. GreenspanTripathi A, Bydder GM, Hughes JMB, Pennock JM, Goatcher A, Orr JS, Steiner RE, Greenspan RH. Effect of oxygen tension on NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate of blood in vivo. Invest Radiol 1984;19:174-178. Spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) was measured in the left (LV) and right (RV) ventricular cavities in four conscious normal humans and four anesthetized greyhound dogs breathing spontaneously. Inspired oxygen concentration (F1O2) was varied in five steps from 21 to 100%. In dogs, blood was sampled from indwelling catheters in the pulmonary artery and aorta for measurement of PO2. Saturation-recovery and inversion-recovery tomographic images of the ventricular cavities were obtained supine during quiet breathing using a whole-body NMR scanner operating at a static magnetic field strength of 0.15 Tesla. From F1O2 21 to 100%, 1/T1 of LV increased by 11.6% in humans and 9.6% in dogs. In dogs, 1/T1 increased by 2.8% per 100 mm Hg increase in aortic PO2 (r > 0.87). There was no correlation in dogs between 1/T1 in RV and pulmonary artery PO2. The LV/RV 1/T1 ratio in dogs increased by 4% per 100 mm Hg increase in the LV-RV PO2 difference, and by 8% in humans as F1O2 increased from 21 to 100%. A rise in dissolved oxygen concentration increases NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates of blood in vivo to a small but significant extent.Item type: Item , Cangrejos gecarcinidos (crustacea; gecarcinidae) de colombia(1984) Henry Von Prahl; Gustavo ManjarrésDiagnostic patterns and figures allow correct identifications of those crabs; also coloration, ecology and their distribution are given.
