Comparisons of immunological tests for serodiagnosis of Chagas disease in Bolivian patients
(Facultad de Medicina, Enfermería, Nutrición y Tecnología Médica, 1985) Brenière, SF
Abstract. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) were evaluated and compared to the classical immunofluorescence (IF) and complement fixation test (CFT) in the immunological diagnosis of Chagas' disease, using 407 sera from Bolivian patients. 72.7 to 79.5% of randomised sera, coming from patients living in endemic areas for Chagas' disease were considered as positive, according to the test limits, previously determined. The techniques could be classified according to their percentage detection as ELISA > IF > CFT > IEP. The quantitative correlations between the tests were excellent (p < 0.001). 92.8% of the sera were positive or negative for the four tests, 6.1% for three tests and 1.1% for only two tests. The agreement between the tests ranged from 94.6 to 99.2%, co-positivity from 95.5 to 100% and co-negativity from 88.5 to 100%. IF gave the best results, and could be considered as the reference test since it was easy and rapid to perform. However to avoid errors or discrepancies between laboratories, two tests, such as IF and CFT, might be associated. ELISA can be used if higher sensitivity is required. IEP showed 1 to 14 precipitation bands in 96% of the sera from infected patients. The precipitation band 5, previously demonstrated as Trypanosoma cruzi specific, was present in 73% of these sera, indicating the interest to use immunoprecipitation test, if more specificity is required for the immunodiagnosis of Chagas' disease.

This report summarizes a biological monitoring study conducted in 1984 by IFREMER, at the request of GAZ DE FRANCE, concerning the impacts of the Montoir liquefied natural gas terminal on the Loire estuarine ecosystem, particularly on ichthyofauna (fish and other aquatic species). The goal was to assess the mechanical impact of the water intake system on the mortality of fish species by observing the fauna trapped in the pumping system and the chances of survival after being released back into the Loire. The study identifies several issues, notably the limited effectiveness of the screening system, which allows larger fish (such as eels) to pass through and get trapped on the drums, preventing their return to the Loire. Additionally, the cleaning rakes often deposit trapped fish into waste bins, blocking their escape. The report suggests increasing the rotation frequency of the cleaning drums and improving the evacuation systems to reduce fish mortality. It also recommends regular cleaning of the drainage channels to prevent the accumulation of waste (such as algae and detached young mussels) that impairs the effective evacuation of fish.In conclusion, the terminal's impact is exacerbated by inadequate management of the pumping and filtration system, affecting the estuarine aquatic fauna.

Local versus Regional Mantle Heterogeneities: Evidence from Hygromagmaphile Elements
    (1985) H. Bougault; J. L. Joron; M. Treuil; René C. Maury
The main objective of Leg 82 of the Glomar Challenger was to document mantle heterogeneity in the vicinity of, and away from, a so-called hot spot: the Azores Triple Junction. One of the geochemical tools that permits, at least in part, the recognition of mantle heterogeneities uses hygromagmaphile elements, those elements that have an affinity for the liquid. This tool is presented in terms of an extended Coryell-Masuda plot, which incorporates within the rare earth elements the hygromagmaphile transition elements Th, Ta, Zr, Hf, Ti, Y, and V. The extended Coryell-Masuda plot is used to summarize our knowledge of mantle heterogeneity along the ridge axis at zero-age. It is also used by choosing those hygromagmaphile elements that can be analyzed on board by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to give preliminary information on the enriched or depleted character of recovered samples. Shore-based results, which include analyses of most of the hygromagmaphile elements measured either by X-ray spectrometry or neutron activation analysis, confirm the shipboard data.

Israelis and Palestinians: Can They Make Peace?*
(Taylor & Francis, 1985) Simha Flapan
In dealing with this problem, the future of which may determine the future of Israel, the Arab world, and peace in the Middle East, it is impossible to avoid a critical review of the past. Both Israelis and Palestinians conceive of the future in terms of ideas and concepts from the past, when the mutual ignorance of each other's realities and problems led to distorted images of each other's national aspirations. In debating a solution to the conflict, it is also necessary to strip from it the elements of propaganda which have brainwashed and poisoned the minds of both peoples to an extent where leaders and decision makers have become its prisoners and the its victims. A good example of this was former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir's famous saying that there is no such thing as a people and the PLO leaders' equation of Zionism with racism and imperialism. At the beginning of this century, Theodor Herzl issued a manifesto on the creation of a Jewish state. A short time thereafter, a Palestinian intellectual, Najib Azuri, wrote the first manifesto on Arab nationalism, which concentrated on the Palestinian question. Herzl predicted that within fifty years, a Jewish state would be a reality. Azuri predicted that within several decades, the Middle East would be the setting for a clash

Energetic delayed hadrons in large air showers observed at 5200m above sea level
    (1985) T. Kaneko; K. Hagiwara; H. Yoshii; N. Martinić; L. Siles; P. Miranda; F. Kakimoto; I. Tsuchimoto; N. Inoue; K. Suga
Energetic delayed hadrons in air showers with electron sizes in the range 10 to the 6th power to 10 to the 9th power were studied by observing the delayed bursts produced in the shield of nine square meter scintillation detectors in the Chacaltaya air-shower array. The frequency of such delayed burst is presented as a function of electron size, core distance and sec theta.

Effect of altitude on the physical growth of upper-class children of European ancestry
(Informa, 1985) Lawrence P. Greksa; Hilde Spielvogel; Esperanza Cáceres
The physical growth of 351 upper-socioeconomic-status children (9-20 years) of European ancestry residing in La Paz, Bolivia (altitude 3600 m) is described and compared with that of lowland children of similar background. The purpose is to evaluate the independent effect of continual exposure to atmospheric hypoxia during the period of growth and development on linear growth. The data presented here indicate that the effect of hypoxia on achieved stature ranges from minimal in males and none in females to a maximum of 3 cm in both sexes. The magnitude of this effect is relatively small compared to the potential effect of other factors which affect the growth of highland children.

Maximal exercise capacity in adolescent european and amerindian high-altitude natives
(Facultad de Medicina, Enfermería, Nutrición y Tecnología Médica, 1985) Greksa, Lawrence P
ABSTRACT Forty-seven highland natives were given maximal exercise tests on a treadmill ergometer at 3,600 m. The subjects were grouped into four subsamples on the basis of ethnicity (European vs. Aymara) and age (young vs. old adolescent). Two-way ANOVA indicated that VO2max adjusted for body size did not differ significantly between ethnic groups but was significantly larger in older than younger boys within each ethnic group (p less than .05). This finding does not support the hypothesis that Amerindian highland natives have adapted genetically to hypoxia but is consistent with the hypothesis that the relatively high VO2max's of highlanders are acquired by developmental adaptation. Several measures of ventilation and oxygen transport capacity differed significantly between ethnic groups, suggesting that growing European and Aymara boys may respond somewhat differently to the stress of high-altitude hypoxia. However, despite these differences, VO2max, an integrated measure of the overall functional capacity of the oxygen transport system, did not differ significantly between ethnic groups, suggesting that both groups are equally capable of meeting the body's oxygen requirements during maximal exercise at high altitude.
