The objective of this work is the estimation of crop evapotranspiration (ETc ) using satellite images on the “El Cenizo” irrigation system, Trujillo state, Venezuela. A Landsat 8 image, plataform launched in February 2013, was used in this study in order to obtain the normalized differences vegetation index (NDVI), which is taken as an indicator of the status of the vegetation and allows the estimation of the crop coefficient (Kc). Then, using weather data, specifically climatic stations adjacent to the study area, the crop evapotranspiration was calculated using the FAO-56 crop coefficient methodology. A 30 m spatial resolution map of crop evapotranspiration was produced as a result. Irrigation water requirements can be calculated from this information of evapotranspiration, which facilitates the operation of the “Agua Viva” reservoir.
