Abstract. La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, a city with about 700,000 inhabitants, extends itself from an altitude of 4000 m above sea level down to 3200 m. The altitude of the Bolivian Institute of Altitude Biology (I.B.B.A.) is 3600 m or 12,200 ft. At this altitude the atmospheric pressure averages about 499 mmHg, which provides an inspired oxygen tension (PIO2) of 95 mmHg.es
