Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to know the notions of non-literate adults about the writing system. This study was based on the theoretical postulates of (1969) Piaget, Vygotsky (1981) and Ferreiro (1997). The used paradigm of research was the qualitative one, through a case study, and the sample included eight non-literate adults, aged between eighteen and sixty years old. The data collection was made from observations, field notes, and the implementation of a survey and two semi-structured interviews. The analysis and interpretation of data was done through the categories proposed by Emilia Ferreiro (1983 a and b) and an additional category proposed by the author. The results obtained in this study indicated that the non-literate adults considered that a text was “readable” when it had letters, and not numbers, that the texts said something when these had value and meaning to their immediate context; In addition, they identified letters and numbers in real contexts and also produced significant anticipations when faced with texts in real contexts; interpreted the parts of a sentence, and managed to locate text on each of the words of the sentence, in the order of issuance. Many of the results obtained in this research, show similarities and differences in the process experienced by children and adults in order to become aware of the system of writing. Data presented in this study could form the basis to build a different proposal for literate adults.
