The participants of this research were Venezuelan students of the career of Education, studying the subject Physics from Nucleo Rafael Rangel of Los Andes University. The modality of the research is a feasible project, in which a DU was built and applied. For validation, T student tests were used in a quasi-experimental design with control group (CG) and experimental group (EG). An instrument composed of 15 items to assess the knowledge related to the theme of sound was applied. The results showed the efficiency provided by the DU, breaking with the traditional pattern of merely lectures and promoting the achievement of the expected competencies through a contextualized learning. It is concluded that the use of DU based on competences is an effective and innovative tool in the area of science, specifically physics, promoting active participation in class as well as meaningful learning.esMathematics educationClass (philosophy)Meaningful learningSubject (documents)PedagogyPsychologyComputer scienceDiseño de una unidad didáctica para la enseñanza de la física a nivel universitariobook-chapter
