En el caso de contaminacion por petroleo, la empresa Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) encontro (para el ano 2002) 10.000 fosas inundadas con crudo y agua. Ademas se producen ripios de perforacion y sustratos afectados por derrames. Para mitigar estos pasivos ambientales, PDVSA ha logrado desarrollar un exitoso sistema denominado INTEBIOS® que utiliza pseudomonas para degradar el crudo. El proceso consiste basicamente en la excavacion del material contaminado, su colocacion en pilas adyacentes al lugar afectado, adicion de fertilizantes, aireacion y disposicion final en la fosa tratada. Este sistema puede degradar un 76% de crudo en 68 dias. Al final, el material es depositado de manera similar a las condiciones originales y la sucesion vegetal se encarga de restablecer la cobertura de plantas para evitar la erosion. Abstract Use of bioremediation techniques for cleaning up petrolium contaminated substrates in eastern Venezuela Bioremediation is a set of techniques designed to take advantages of living organisms for decontaminating polluted substrates. Venezuelan state-owned petroleum company, PDVSA, identified 10,000 pits inundated with crude oil and contaminated water in the year 2002. These waste materials consist of soil from excavation process and substrate affected by crude oil spillage. To reduce such environmental liability, PDVSA has been able to develop a successful decontamination system called INTEBIOS® which uses pseudomonas bacteria to degrade the crude oil. The process consists of excavating the polluted material, its placement in piles adjacent to the affected area, adding certain fertilizers, providing aeration and a final arrangement of the treated hole. This system can degrade 76% of petroleum in 68 days.In the end, the treated material is deposited back into the pit leaving the sitesimilar to theconditionsas theoriginal.
