This study was aimed at determining the relation between socio-ethnographic features of academics of two faculties at the University of the Andes in Venezuela, and the knowledge of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and how frequent this is used. It is a descriptive-relational study for which a questionnaire measuring academics’ ICT skills was designed. The results show that academics trained in scientific and technical areas know ICT more and use it more frequently than the ones trained in social sciences. Additionally, length of service and promotion ladder heavily influence this: academics, who are at the bottom of the promotion ladder and whose service is not long, are more likely to know ICT more and use it more frequently in teaching.

(2012) Mary Alexandra Arias Guerrero; Beatriz Elena Sandia Saldivia; Elsa Josefina Mora Gallardo
Classroom setting course and interactive distance learning require teaching methods. Didactics, then, is seen both as an art and as a set of techniques leading education process by means of material resources, lesson plans, rules, and active communication, among others. Internet has a wide variety of tools (forums, chat rooms, blogs) that may help teacher to improve this process. This study describes on line teaching strategies used in two workshops called Formacion del tutor virtual (Virtual Teacher Training) and Estrategias Didacticas de Trabajo en Moodle (Moodle Teaching Strategies). Results show that these are learner centered teaching strategies which contribute to the use of new dynamics towards knowledge acquisition and construction.

Collaborative learning becomes an important strategy in interactive distance education that supports interaction and teamwork between participants, allowing the development of acquisition and knowledge building processes. Collaboration in Artificial Intelligence fields is performed with the help of agents, ontologies and knowledge basis. Ontologies allow defining and representing all terms used in certain domain that can be reused and shared. This research outlines an ontology, using Methontology methodology for its development, that represents a model of collaborative learning, the elements that comprise it, as well as the rules of management processes of the interaction following the guidelines of a business environment.
