Item type: Item , Gender Equity in Computing(2016) Margaret Hamilton; Andrew Luxton-Reilly; Naomi Augar; Vanea Chiprianov; Eveling Castro-Gutiérrez; Elizabeth Vidal; Helen H. Hu; Shoba Ittyipe; Janice L. Pearce; Michael J. OudshoornIn many countries serious effort has been put into developing and running programs that encourage girls to enjoy learning programming. At school level, many girls have done very well in these experiences, but despite their confidence and enthusiasm for programming at the time of the intervention, few have continued on to enroll in tertiary computing programs. In higher education institutions, numerous equity initiatives have attempted to improve both recruitment and retention, yet the pipeline continues to shrink.Item type: Item , Modelado y Diagnóstico de Procesos de Ingeniería y Proyectos en una Empresa Minera: Una Experiencia BPMN-XP(2016) Elizabeth VidalMany organizations manage and control their business processes to gain a competitive advantage. A business process can involve multiple participants, whose coordination can be complex, and difficult to manage and control. Thus, BPMN graphical notations have become popular. Due to recurring delays and defaults on large engineering projects, a large Peruvian mining company began a modeling and process diagnostics initiative. This paper describes the BPMN model produced. The model combines cross-cutting characteristics of engineering projects with details specific to mining projects. The model was developed iterative with the active participation of the Document Control Manager of the Engineering and Projects Area and underwent a final validation by the Superintendent of Planning and Control. The model describes the existing processes in a clear, standard, and complete manner. The model allowed the diagnosis of inefficiencies, identifying bottlenecks caused by a) jobs with work overload, b) sub-processes that are too long and consist of too many tasks, and c) lack of warnings in some activities. While the successful experiences in the use of BPMN are many in the literature, the main objective of this paper is to describe the experience of the application of agile methodology eXtreme Programming (XP), applied in software projects, in developing our job.Item type: Item , Using Google Earth and KML to teach Fundamental Object Oriented Programming(2019) Elizabeth Vidal; Eveling Castro-Gutiérrez; Ali ErkanIn this paper, we present our experience in the use of simple KML files and Google Earth to reinforce the learning of fundamentals of Object Oriented programming. We believe that this approach would reduce the difficulty of understanding abstract concepts like decomposition, fields and methods. We report on our exploratory study the assessment of student engagement. This approach would serve to motivate students about computation and enable students to process data to solve real problems.
