The precipitation regime in the Huarinilla river basin was studied through the analysis of data collected by eight rainfall gauges installed since 1995. The basin is located on the humid eastern side of the Andes, between 5.600 and 1.100 m. As the period of measurement was short and with the aim of inferring the long term pattern, a statistical analysis was carried out using a gauge with a much longer record. The results obtained show that total annual precipitation exceeds 3.000 mm in most of the cloud forest region, where the rain is continuous and of moderate intensity. It is in the range of 1.500 to 2.200 mm/year in the “paramo yungueno” and mountain forest regions. A great spatial variability was observed, which is associated with the complex relief.
