Changes due to scientific, technological, political, social, and economic factors require new reading and writing approaches. This study focuses on critical reading activities and how they influence on writing process. A qualitative-based study was applied to university students from the School of Education, who attended the course in Literacy, and who were registered in the program of Elementary and High School Education. The results show that the presence of an accompanying teacher and the activity of reading academic texts on one topic improve academic writing. Critical literacy is a lifelong process; it depends on social and cultural elements.
