Abstract
The present paper reviews the physiology of nitric oxide and its generation from L-arginine through the action of nitric oxide synthase and its role in renal physiology and pathophysiology. Some relevant aspects of nitric oxide participation in renal hypertension, glomerulonephritis and renal disease progression are also reviewed.
