Abstract

Objective: to determine the self-medication profile of students from the Faculty of Chemical Sciences from the National University of Asunción Methodology: This is a descriptive, ob-servational study with a non-probabilistic and convenient sampling performed in May 2016 to a population of 115 university students entering the Faculty of Chemical Sciences of the National University of Asunción in the year 2015. Resulte: The average age of the popula-tion ¡n study was 20 years oíd, mostly wom-en. 85 of them consumed drugs, 83 stu-dents self-medicated for minor pathologies, 25 did ¡t out of necessity using a mixture of painkillers and anti-inflammatories. The most frequent reasons were that 42% did not consider did not think it necessary to go to the doctor while 68% did so at the sug-gestion of a family member or friend who indicated the medication to be consumed. Conclusión: Self-medication is a com-mon practice among the university popula-tion studied here as well as in their imme-diate environment. 45% recognize having taken drugs without a prescription, 66% self-medicates customarily even though 92% of the studied population understand that self-medication is a risky practice.
