This paper explores the way in which the concept of the right to student participation (SP) has gained strength in the last twenty years in education worldwide and particularly in Mexico. In addition, it addresses the background of participation, the legal and theoretical definitions, as well as the various approaches that conceive it as a fundamental tool for school democratic life.
