Abstract

Carbon credits emerged as a response to the need for effective measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and combat climate change. They offer a pragmatic means to make meaningful contributions toward global climate goals and the imperative to reduce emissions in a rapidly changing climate. By exploring market-based solutions with sustainable development principles and technology-driven innovations, this document tackles the basics of carbon credits, from their benefits to emerging technologies that address the challenges of these tradable permits. Therefore, the paper reviews the emerging literature on voluntary carbon credits, offers an overview, and discusses the associated risks and implications for their implementation.
