dc.description.abstractProfessional burnout syndrome and family support in postgraduate clinical and surgical residents of the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de Los Andes, Merida, Venezuela. The study evaluated the syndrome of burnout and its relationship with demographic variables and family support. The participants were 187 medicine residents. The Venezuelan version of the Maslach’s Burnout Inventory and the APOFA were used to measure burnout and family support respectively. Results showed that: (a) of the three components of the syndrome, emotional exhaustion was higher than depersonalization and this was higher than lack of professional accomplishment, (b) close to 50% of the sample experienced moderate to high level of emotional exhaustion, (c) emotional exhaustion was higher among residents with lower incomes, first year of residence, and working fulltime, (d) gender, marital status, and number of children were not associated with any components of the syndrome, (e) in general, perceived family support was high, and (f) dimensions of burnout were negatively
