Osteoma de Condilo Mandibular : Reporte de un caso

Abstract

Maxillofacial tumor lesions can cause mandibular deviation, limitation of mouth opening, malocclusion, severe pain and facial asymmetry. Benign tumorlike lesions of bone as a maxillary osteoma may infrequently appear, in the temporomandibular joint producing changes that harm the individual’s health. Osteoma’s etiology is unknown, it generally unilateral is mostly present in male. It mostly affects the maxillary sinuses and the jaw’s angle or condyle. We report a case of a 40-years old female patient from Merida, who attended to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery office at the Service of dentistry at the Autonomous Institute Hospital of the University of Los Andes (IAHULA) referring pain while moving the jaw, facial asymmetry with mandibular deviation to the left and limitation for mouth opening. The treatment was conducted by a pre-auricular approach and total condylectomy; the extracted material was sent for biopsy. Biopsy results showed right condylar osteoma. When performing total excision of the lesion, facial asymmetry was significantly improved as well as articular functionality. Clinical and radiographic controls were performed at 6, 12 and 18 months, with no signs of relapse. The patient was referred for orthodontic treatment and rehabilitation.
