Abstract

Introduction: Lack of oral health affects all humans equally. Latin American indigenous do not escape from this reality thus they present different oral diseases. Systematic reviews which do not developed properly the information were found, therefore the objective of this systematic review is to describe the state of oral health of Latin American indians. Methodology: Information sources: Medline via PubMed; electronic libraries: SciELO, Virtual Health Library (VHL) coordinated by BIREME, via Cochrane and Cochrane VHL; academic search engines: Google academics. The selected items are Type: research articles 49; systematic reviews 5; theses 5 and clinical case 1. Results: The oral health status is affected by various diseases, being the most prevalent tooth decay. In relation to the anatomical variants of the jaws and teeth, anatomical details are related to genetics and variability of occlusions types and to their lifestyle and / or habits. For oral hygiene and preventing oral diseases plants are used. Few indigenous communities are treated, however the own expertise of these communities try to solve some problems, usually only if they have painful symptoms. Conclusions: It is recommended that indigenous communities are addressed to solve their problems respecting their customs with the help of translators if necessary, also, to promote oral health is suggested to optimize their quality of life.
