Abstract
The convent of San José in La Orotava opened its doors in January 1601, but the project to found it was conceived much earlier. Over the centuries it grew architecturally until it occupied the entirety of the most coveted block in the urban center of the town. It survived until 1869, when it was closed and demolished. This article covers the moments prior to the foundation and the subsequent development of the building until its disappearance, from the point of view of its architecture and incorporating historical data and information to complete the outline of its history.
