Introduction: The luxation of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) occurs when the condyle of the joint eminence is unable to return to its natural position due to excessive movement or bad dental practice, this is treated through non-surgical routes (splints) and surgical (arthrocentesis). Objective: to determine the effectiveness of treatments to correct TMJ luxation based on a systematic review of the literature. Methods: search engines were used: Medline through Pubmed, PMC and NCBI through Pubmed, Elsevier (ScienceDirect),theCochrane Library, the VHLLibrary, considering systematic reviews, meta-analysis,and clinical trials. Results: the electronic search yielded 905 articles, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria a total of 91 articles were obtained forthis systematic review. After having been read,46 were selected: 12 systematic reviews, 32 clinical trials and 2 meta-analyses, which were classifiedinto two categories, surgical and non-surgical treatments. Conclusions: splints proved to be the most effective non-surgical treatment as it reduces pain intensity, is anti-inflammatory, non-invasive, increases mouth opening and is effective in the long term.
