MANIFESTACIONES CLÍNICAS DE LA ANOREXIA Y BULIMIA EN CAVIDAD BUCAL

Abstract

Anorexia is a disorder characterized by the presence of deliberate weight loss in the patient, while bulimia is a syndrome that presents episodes of overeating and concern about weight control, these disorders have oral effects which overshadow dental problems; therefore, the objective of the present research is to describe, based on available scientific evidence, the three main clinical manifestations in the oral cavity caused by anorexia and bulimia. In that way, it would be possible to help dentists improve their diagnoses. Dental erosion is caused by factors related to diseases associated with vomiting, it is the most common manifestation of eating disorders; xerostomia is common in anorexic and bulimic patients caused by diuretics, ingested laxatives, as well as swollen glands: Periodontal diseases are characterized by affecting tissues underlying the teeth. It is concluded that patients suffering from those diseases present erosion on the maxillary anterior teeth; a sign of anorexia in oral cavity could be found with xerostomia and gingivitis. Recognizing those signs is the first approach to the diagnosis of the disease.
